Essay
Background Information:
The theme for the 2013 Show-Me SWCS Scholarship
is “Conservation Pays: Exploring the Social and Economic Impacts”.
For those interested in conservation, it’s “value” is often felt
more in the heart than the wallet. Whether your heart-rate quickens
at the sight of a big buck deer or an unexplored cave opening, you
value conservation. If your pulse calms as the sun falls below the
horizon or in response to the sound of a babbling creek, you value
conservation. But conservation also means an infusion of money into
the Missouri economy, through tourism, business, and other means.
And, as is often the case, money talks with land owners,
legislatures, and the general public.
Through your essay,
we want you to explore as many of the ways that conservation of
Missouri’s natural resources, including its soils and water, can be
measured in dollar signs, rather than warm-fuzzies.
Essay Topic:
Please select a
natural resource-related topic and explain how it brings money to
Missouri individuals and the public. Really reach for those aspects
that are less obvious on the surface of the issue. We encourage you
to examine your own topic of interest, or one listed below.
-
Water quality - Cover crops
-
Burn bans - Wildlife population
management
-
Cave exploration - Fish stocking
-
Healthy, protected soils - Timber Stand Improvement
-
Recycling - Elk repopulation
